Configuring Fixed Gateway for ethernet

This document details what to do for a Fixed Gateway communicating to Nimbus, via a sites IT network.

The instructions below include the following type of Network configurations and the requirements for each :

  • Gateway IP address set via DHCP (with or without a Reservation)
  • Static IP address manually configured in Gateway.

IT Department required

It is advised, that you notify the IT department or person who manages the sites network of the installation of a Fixed Gateway, to ensure network permissions and access requirements are met in a timely manner and to avoid delays in installation.

Instructions for IP Address via DHCP

By default, the Fixed Gateway can be given an I.P. address, dynamically, via a local DHCP Server. This means that when the Fixed Gateway is plugged into the Ethernet port, there is no further configuration of the Fixed Gateway required.

Instructions for IP Address via DHCP, with a Reservation

A DHCP Reservation ensures the Fixed Gateway is consistently given the same I.P. address by the DHCP Server, which maybe a requirement if Firewall rules are being applied (see below).
This will be managed by the IT department, who will ask for the MAC Address of the Fixed Gateway, to enable the reservation before installation.

Note: The MAC address of the Fixed Gateway can be found on the Nimbus packaging and module.

Instructions for Static IP

Networks lacking a DHCP Server, or restricted in other ways, may require the Gateway is configured with a 'Static IP Address' which will be supplied by the IT department managing the Network.
You will need to connect a PC to the MINI USB Port on the Gateway and run the Gateway Configuration Tool, to configure the IP details.

Hardware

  • RJ45 Port
  • Ethernet cable
  • A Laptop with Windows 7 or later
  • A USB A to USB Mini Cable

Software

Fixed Gateway Configuration

  • Obtain the following IP details from the IT department, that must then be entered into the Fixed Gateway, via the Gateway Configuration Tool:
    • I.P. address
    • Subnet mask
    • Gateway IP
    • DNS 1
    • DNS 2 (Optional)

WARNING: Fixed Gateway communication can be interrupted, if any permissions changes to the network are made, after configuration to the device. Please seek assistance from the persons or department responsible for the network, amend any issues that may arise. Network changes without planning can result in an unscheduled callout to site.

Firewalls and Network Restrictions

Many Networks have Firewalls and other restrictions that may prevent the Gateway communicating with Nimbus. We require the following:

  • Open Outbound TCP/IP Port 54536, from the Fixed Gateway to nimbus.lancontrolsystems.com
  • Open Outbound TCP/IP Port 80, from the Fixed Gateway to nimbus.lancontrolsystems.com
  • No Network Access Control lists being applied to the Network data port being used by the Fixed Gateway.

Note: If a Fixed Gateway is NOT communicating (showing offline in Nimbus), usually one, or a combination, of the above requirements may have been missed.
